On the Prohibition of Music

“From amongst men there are those who purchase ‘lahw al hadith’ without knowledge, to mislead from the Path of Allah and they ridicule it. For them there is a humiliating punishment.” (Luqmân: 6)

A detailed research has been made by Maulana Ismail Moosa, a student from the Darul Iftaa of Madrasa In’aamiyyah (Camperdown, SA), and it of course has been approved by the respected Mufti Ebrahim Desai (damat barkatuhum aliah).

تنبيه للاحباء الى تحريم الغناء (trans. A Caution for our Companions on the Prohibition of Music) is packed with evidences from both the Holy Qur’an and Ahadith. On top of that the verdicts of numerous Sahabah & Tabi’een, ‘Ulama of all four Madhab (and even Ghair Muqallid) and various recent ‘Ulama leave no space for doubts any longer. Even the misconception people have about the use of duffs has been dealt with.

  1. Shareef Muhammad says:

    There is no explicit verse in Quran prohibiting music like there exist for intoxicants, fornication and gambling of which there is no difference of opinion among the ulema. Also, the scholars of the methodology of the hadith sciences, like Ibn Hazm (r.a.) to name one, agree that the ahadith referenced in this article and others are false or at best weak. Furhtermore, I found this articles statements about music to be hyperbolic and in some cases just outright ridiculous. Statements such as music causes psychological disorders (of which there is zero proof) and that if someone believes music to be permissible that it is a sign of disbelief are all absurdities that reflect a deficiency in intelligence. I understand that those who believe music to be haram are wholeheartedly conviced but they will have to accept the fact that music has in some form always apart of the ummah since the time of the Prophet (saws) and that it will continue to be apart of the ummah. There is no demonstrable proof that music with a right-minded message causes harm of any sort. Furthermore, if the voice was such a defect as this asinine article states then why was Bilal chosen to be the muazzin? I await anyone’s response.

    The link to Inamiyyah website doesn’t work for me, why?

    To Shareef Muhammad;

    Why was Bilal chosen to be the muazzin? Muazzin calls out the adzan, a call to prayer. He announce to the people that time for solah has come. And it is part of the Islamic law to give adzaan (read fiqh kitaab).

    Now…..singing and dancing, how are these part of Islam? We all know what message and ideology nowadays music promotes right? Haram music are those ones. Lady Gaga Justin Bieber’s kind of music to name a few. There even worse ones which clearly promote indecency, shamelessness and vices.

    I have personally experienced the negative effect of music in my life. Music numbs my heart from remembering Allah. The more a person listen to music, the harder it is for him to listen to Quran and advice.

    Yes, indeed some voice are ‘magical’, I used to love music before but I tried hard to stop because music kills our heart. My brother still listen to music, it is very difficult to have him wake up for Fajr solah.

    May Allah give us tawfiq, Wassalam.
